CANBERRA (Reuters) - One of the largest giant squid ever found has washed up on a remote
Australian beach, sparking a race against time by scientists to examinethe rarely seen deep-ocean
creature. The squid, the mantle or main body of whichmeasured two-meters (6.5 feet) long, was found
by a walker late on Tuesday onOcean Beach, near Strahan, on the western coast of island state Tasmania. "It's a
whopper," Tasmanian Museum senior curator Genefor Walker-Smith told local mediaon Wednesday.
"The main mantle is about one meter across and its total length isabout eight meters."
Scientists would take samples from the creature, identified by state parks officials as anArchiteuthis,
which can grow to more than 10 meters (33 feet) in length and weigh morethan 275 kilograms (606 pounds).
TheTasmanian animal was 250 kg, Pemberton said.
The tentacles had been badly damaged, so the overall length of the animal could not be determined,
a Tasmania Parks and Wildlife spokeswoman said. Park rangers had moved the remains from the water.
Giant squid, once believed to be mythical despite occasional sightings by mariners, feed on fish and other squid. Last year, fishermen off the Falkland
Islands caught a complete animal measuring 8.62 meters.
Scientists believe giant squid usually live at ocean depths of between 200-700 meters (660-2,300 ft), relying in part on volleyball-sized eyes, the largest
in the animal kingdom. Scientists said giant squid gathered along Australia's continental shelf in cold mid-winter waters to feed on Grenadier fish. The
squid were in turn hunted by sperm whales migrating north from the Southern Ocean.
Japanese ocean researchers captured the first ever pictures of a live giant squid in September 2004 off Japan's Ogasawara Islands at a depth of 900
meters.

2007 JUNEAU ALASKA AREA FISHING REPORT
|
2007 Weekly Harvest Rates - Week of July 9 - 15
Region Wide:
Halibut and coho salmon fishing were excellent throughout most of the region, while the Chinook salmon fishing is slowing down at most ports. Chum salmon are
showing up in decent numbers in Ketchikan, Juneau, Gustavus and Elfin Cove, while pink salmon are being picked up in decent numbers at all ports except
Wrangell and Yakutat.
Harvest rates for Chinook salmon last week ranged from good to poor at the outer coast ports of Craig (24 rod hours per harvested Chinook salmon), Sitka (9
rod hours), Elfin Cove (28 rod hours) and Yakutat (79 rod hours). Inner coast ports had harvest rates ranging from 11 rod hours at Wrangell to 389 rod hours at
Gustavus. Harvest rates for Chinook salmon were better than the five-year average at Wrangell.
Hatchery Chinook salmon are returning to numerous enhancement areas around the Southeast Alaska region, and liberalized sport fish harvest regulations for
the Terminal Harvest Areas (THA) have gone into effect. Please check here for more details on the specifics for each THA’s opening timing and regulations
Halibut harvest rates ranged from 1 rod hour per fish in Craig to 8 rod hours in Juneau. The harvest rates at Craig, Wrangell, Petersburg and Gustavus were
better or equal to their respective five-year averages for this time of year.
Harvest rates for coho salmon are nearing their peak levels at some ports, with all sampled ports having harvested coho salmon encountered by our creel survey
personnel. Harvest rates ranged from 2 rod hours per fish in Craig and Yakutat to 44 rod hours in Petersburg. The harvest rates were better than or equal to
the five-year averages at Craig, Juneau, Gustavus and Elfin Cove; and only slightly poorer than the five-year averages at Ketchikan and Sitka.
Harvested pink salmon were encountered at six ports last week, with harvest rates ranging from 2 rod hours per harvested pink salmon in Gustavus and Elfin
Cove to 49 rod hours in Sitka. Ketchikan, Petersburg, Gustavus and Elfin Cove had harvest rates better than or equal to their five-year averages.
Harvested chum salmon were encountered at six ports last week, with harvest rates ranging from 23 rod hours per harvested chum salmon in Gustavus to 596
rod hours in Craig. Gustavus and Elfin Cove had harvest rates better than their five-year averages.

How the Spook got its name.
|
By ERIC SHARP Detroit Free Press
DOWAGIAC, Mich. — Almost every serious angler knows about the
Heddon Zara Spook, one of the top-10 artificial lures of all time and still a
standby after 80 years. But did you ever wonder how it got its name?
The original wood version, the Zaragossa, was made in the 1920s for
fishing in Florida. After watching a prototype lure zigzag across the water
in a test tank, a Heddon worker remarked that it wiggled its butt just like
the hookers on Zaragoza Street in Panama City.READ FULL STORY
*****POLARIS SUPREME UPDATE*****
July 17 - Yesterday we had a travel day. It was a little bumpy and choppy
coming up the line. The passengers just relaxed and enjoyed a fresh tuna
sandwich and Ceasar salad for lunch and for dinner we were treated to crab
stuffed chicken on rice with a black bean sauce and grilled squash on the side.
Really good. This morning we are still traveling and it is still bumpy. It looks
like it is nicer up above and we should have a nice afternoon and a few hours of
fishing before we have to head in. We will be a the dock at 6:00 am Wednesday

News Release
Commercial Greenlings Fishery Season Set to Close Aug. 1, 2007
Contact(s):
Robert Leos, DFG Marine Region, (831) 649-2889
Deb Wilson Vandenberg, DFG Marine Region, (831) 649-2892
The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) has announced that the commercial fishery for greenlings (genus Hexagrammos) will close Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007
at 12:01 a.m. for the remainder of the year.
Based on recent landing receipts and dockside tabulation efforts, DFG expects that by Aug. 1, the annual commercial allocation of 3,400 pounds of greenling
(both kelp and rock greenling combined) will be taken for the 2007 calendar year. The recreational fishery for greenlings will remain open.
The latest estimates from the DFG indicate approximately 3,000 pounds of commercial greenlings were landed by mid-July 2007. Historically, catch rates
increase throughout the summer.
Greenlings (both kelp and rock greenling) are nearshore species of fish found mostly in California’s northern and central coastal areas and are highly valued in
the live-fish fishery.
In May 2002, the Fish and Game Commission adopted regulations providing DFG the authority to close either or both the recreational and commercial sectors of
the greenling, sheephead, and cabezon fisheries when their allowable harvest levels are projected to be reached.
Beginning in 2004, two-month cumulative trip limits were instituted for the commercial California sheephead, greenling, and cabezon fisheries in an effort to
sustain those fisheries throughout the year. The greenling fishery has a two-month cumulative trip limit of 25 pounds per nearshore fishery permit holder when
fishing is permitted.

Saltwater Sportsman Proudly Announces Winners for the 2007 High Hook Awards
Among the winners for the Saltwater Sportsmans High Hook Awards was Reel Wood, makers of the Siderigger. I first introduced the SideRigger to
you last year when I found them at the MAATS convention in Las Vegas. What does Saltwater Sportsman have to say about the Siderigger.....
even small boats can pull a big-boat spread with the Siderigger ($350) from Reel Wood. This 71⁄2-foot retractable boom has a base that fits in a
flush-mounted rod holder. Like an outrigger, the Siderigger comes with a release clip and cord that runs from end to end, allowing you to place
a lure off to the side of the boat and widen your pattern. Two rod holders on the base let you deploy the Siderigger without sacrificing a
gunwale rod holder, and they make it a snap to set out a lure and teaser combo in the proper, staggered position. We used the Siderigger to troll
up everything from bluefish to bluefin on a 24-foot boat. Reel Wood; (919) 647-4588;

African Tiger Fish
A long time visitor to this site recently sent us a photo of a very mean looking fish. At first we thought it was a fantastic job of somebodies
photoshop expertise but upon much closer look we decided it was for real. So we had to find out what kind of fish this thing was. We found a
couple of references to such a fish known as the African Tiger Fish. So, we looked up that species and lo and behold it was right on the money.
This fish was supposedly caught in Congo Africa in 2006. We did find many websites which tell all about the Tiger Fish. To see one of them

“We estimate that approximately 8,000 to 11,000 trout
and 750 to 1,000 perch died over the last couple of days,”
says Drake. “We believe it is due to the lack of dissolved
oxygen within the water.” READ FULL STORY

Pappy's World / An American Angler is Proud to Introduce
August 18, 2007 On Saturday (August 18th) we went to Riverside for a
small Hunting Convention. While there we met representatives from The
Chaiten Lodge and Canoes West.
The Chaiten Lodge is located in Chile and offers not only awesome fishing
but also splendid countryside and atmosphere. Chaiten Lodge is located
amidst the stunning landscape that is the Northern Patagonia,
40 kilometers south of the small town of Chaitén. The lodge is made up of
two parcels of land located on the adjacent Rio Michinmahuida and Rio
Yelcho.
Specializing in Fly Fishing you'll find exquisite Salmon and trout January
through much of March is summer in the Patagonia. Days are now long, we
are seeing more sun and less rain, and dry fly fishing can be fantastic. You’ll
pick up a lot of your fish by sight fishing. Exact imitations of flies won’t be
as important as the presentation. Salmon begin to run in February and into
the first part of March. There are many waters and fish to catch. The hard
part is in the choosing, but there are no bad choices. www.chaitenlodge.com
Canoes West is owned and operated by a gentleman known as Surfer Joey.
Joey is an extraordinary craftsman and produces some of the finest
handmade wooden canoes and kayaks that I have ever seen. Joey started
this business by building his first canoe as a father-son project. Then he
moved on to building for friends. Inspired by the enthusiasm of a new
generation for old-world handcrafted woodworking, he moved on to start
building for the general public.
Joey developed his love for woodworking over forty years ago. He is a
master woodworker in construction, which has led into a career of helping
clients create custom wood pieces that they have dreamt of. The quality of
his canoe building has not gone unnoticed, winning awards from his peers at
the Fine Woodworker’s Association of Southern California. Visit them at

Some of you may have already heard about the new Laser Lure. This
product was introduced at ICAST this year. It caught our attention so
we thought we'd check it out for ourselves. A local Las Vegas reporter
received one of the lures and tried it out at Comins Lake in Ely where
he caught a large Rainbow Trout.
We contacted the inventor / manufacturer and told him we'd love to do
a few field tests of our own. Two days ago we received the lures in the
mail. Our first impression was that the lures were built well. They
were equipped with sharp, quality Mustad hooks in blood red color.
Over the next few weeks we will conduct field tests with the Laser
Lure. Our first mission will be to fish it at Lundy Lake in California.
From there we will hit the waters of Lake Mojave at the upper portion
of the Black Canyon. We'll fish the lure in the late hours of the night
for Striped Bass. Early morning we'll continue our way to various
known points and work in a few coves. We'll then go slightly upriver in
search of Rainbows.
The following day we'll take the lure downriver towards Cottonwood in
search of Largemouth. Our last trip will be back up to Comins Lake
where we'll try for Pike and Rainbows. A few lures will also be given
to some of the local guides to try at Lake Mead and Lake Mojave.
We expect testing will be complete within the three or four weeks at
which time we'll give you a full unbiased report complete with photos.
THE LASER LURE By Bay Design The Laser Lure comes in a wide variety of styles and colors. While you're waiting on the completion of our field test please visit the Laser Lure site by clicking on their banner above.

EFTTA PLEDGES ACTION AFTER SEA FISHING LICENCE SCHEME DAMAGES TACKLE SALES IN EUROPE
|
The European Fishing Tackle Trade Association
September 13 2007
The European Fishing Tackle Trade Association (EFTTA) today urged governments across Europe to think carefully
before introducing sea fishing licences, after it was revealed that the introduction of a licence scheme in Portugal has
had a catastrophic effect on tackle sales in the country.
The official trade body, EFTTA, which represents almost 300 manufacturers and wholesalers, warned that the
widespread adoption of sea angling licences, which is due to be considered in a number of European countries, could
damage the 25 billion euros generated in socio-economic value by recreational fishermen across Europe.

Angling Retains its Mainstream Appeal and Broad Economic Impact Despite competition for time and access, fishing is still an economic powerhouse
|
American Sportfishing Association
September 26, 2007—ALEXANDRIA, VA—
Despite competition from video games and other similar activities and increased urbanization, recreational angling
remains one of the largest outdoor recreational activities in the nation as well as one of the most solid industries in
the United States . Annually, nearly 40 million anglers generate over $45 billion in retail sales with a $125 billion
impact on the nation’s economy creating employment for over one million people.
The latest National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-Associated Recreation released by the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service (USFWS), however, does show a decline in angling participation over the past 5 years with the
steepest falloff among Great Lakes anglers. Despite a decline in participation, tackle sales increased by $250 million
over the past five years. The USFWS conducts its survey every five years with the latest survey conducted in 2006.

Tests Find Unsafe Chemical Levels in Smallmouth Bass Near Dam.
|
The Oregonian Staff - reported by Michael Milstein
March 18, 2008—The Oregonian Staff
Despite New tests of smallmouth bass from the Columbia River near Bonneville Dam found fish with concentrations of industrial chemicals of as
much as 26,000 times higher than what state officials consider safe for human consumption.
Officials warned against eating fish from the area.
The fish were collected in 2006 near Bradford Island, where Bonneville Dam workers historically disposed of electrical equipment by dumping it
into the river. Some of the equipment contained polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, known to have contaminated the area. READ FULLSTORY
